Mommy Maternity

No I am not pregnant. . . .YET! But I do have a lot of friends who are. And the one thing I hear a lot about is finding clothes that work while you are pregnant.  Maternity clothes have come a long way from when my mom was pregnant.  We no longer have to wear "moo-moo's" or our husbands clothes.  Several stores and companies have started making really cute clothes for mommies to be. I will admit that I have been shopping in Target and have come across some really cute tops or sweaters, purchased them, and gotten home to see the Liz Lange Maternity tag on them! A lot of people think that just buying the cute trapeze shirts that are really in right now are the perfect maternity wear, but I have to tell you, its probably not the most flattering option.  Most of my friends tell me that they want to show off that they are pregnant, or want people to know they are pregnant and not just gaining a few pounds here and there. Most women feel trapped or confined to what they can wear while they are expecting their little bundle of joy.  I have done a little research and come across several staple items that I think will be comfortable and flattering.

Just because you are pregnant doesn't mean you have to dress frumpy or resort to unflattering clothes. Embrace being pregnant, show it off, and look good while doing it!

  • Try to look for Empire Waist shirts and dresses.  These tend to be fitted around your top half and a little more giving/loose in the middle.  This trend is all over the place right now, and its perfect for expecting mothers.

  • Incorporate Belts into your wardrobe. Use a skinny belt to accentuate your growing belly. It will allow looser tops to fit closer to your body and make your outfit less baggy.

  • Use tie sweaters or wraps in your wardrobe.  If nothing seems to look right or you are just having one of those days, throw on your jeans, a long or short sleeve t-shirt, and a tie wrap/sweater. Add some jewelry and you are ready to go. Honestly, the simplest outfit a lot of the time ends up being the most flattering.

  • Add Color to your wardrobe. I know it is really easy to stick with black and grey during the winter months, but try and add some color to your everyday outfits.  Whether it's with a shirt, dress, or scarf. This is one of the most exciting times in your life, so embrace it and be happy. Wearing things that make your feel good and look good will add to your daily happiness. And color can do exactly that! If you are a monochromatic girl (guilty!), try to look outside of your comfort zone.  Instead of black, get purple. If you just are more comfortable with black or grey, or that's all you have in your closet, add a pop of color with shoes, or a scarf, or fun necklaces.
Here are just a few of the websites that have fabulous maternity options. I swear some of them don't even look like maternity clothes!!

asos.com
gap.com
oldnavy.com
nordstrom.com
target.com

These are a few Fall/Winter sets I put together. Don't be afraid to play and experiment with clothes. Even if you don't think it's going to look good on, try it anyway.  You never know what something will look like just by looking at it on the hanger.

Maternity Shirts
Here are some great shirt options. Most of these are empire waist, which is so flattering on pregnant mommies. Throw on leggings or jeans, flat boots or skimmers and you are ready to go.
