Holiday Shopping Guide: Men's Gifts

Let's face it, this present is usually the one that takes more thought than most.  Or at least it does for me.  My guy usually buys what he wants throughout the year, and really doesn't want for much, which can make things a little tougher.  I started back in the spring just jotting down things I would hear him talk about or I would notice he didn't own.  Or I would find things that I thought he might like and keep those as ideas too. Whatever you have to do to make this time of year easier, do it!

Below are some of my "go-to" gift ideas for the men in your life.  These just about cover any type of personality and price range.  Hope this is a good start to making your list and marking things off!

Coats of many layers

Since moving to the east coast I have had to step up my coat game.  Gone are the days when I could just buy one coat and it get me through several winters.  Now with the changing temperatures going from mildly cold to bitterly freezing in one week, I have had to deepen my coat collection.  For me, it's important to invest in a good coat.  You want something that will last through the season as well as keep you as warm as possible.  You can still look fashionable and stay warm at the same time without looking like an abominable snowman! Below are some great options for all degrees of cold.

Fancy Plaid

Having gone to Catholic school up until Jr. High, wearing plaid was a requirement.  Black-watch plaid to be exact. We had to wear uniforms to school everyday and only on holidays or for holiday parties we were allowed to exercise our fashion sense and wear what we wanted.  I didn't hate having my clothes basically picked out for me everyday, but there were days when i wanted to do my own thing and wear something else.

Plaid has always been a constant in my wardrobe.  I have owned many a plaid skirts, shirts, shorts, jackets, and bags.  You can dress it up or down and its all the statement you usually need so you can keep everything else simple and basic if you so choose.  I have noticed that more and more plaid pieces are making their way into my wardrobe each fall/winter.  For the holidays I love pairing plaid with sequins, other patterns, feathers and fur.  This is the time of year where you can really pull out all the stops and go all out.  Here are some great options for holiday events and parties.

(I would tuck both plaid shirts into the skirts for a more polished look)

The best accessory

I have never been much of a lipstick girl.  I own a plethora colors, brands, and types but always just ended up using chapstick.  Over the past few months, I have put more of an effort into wearing lipstick and I can honestly say, I am starting to really get into this. I don't wear much makeup so putting on a fun lipstick just completes my look (and adds some color to my pale complexion).  And it turns out that Red has become my go to color. Who knew!?  There is just something so classic and chic about a red lip and it's universally flattering (but make sure you find the right red for your skin tone) Below are a few that have been put into heavy rotation.  I just bought a fantastic berry color from YSL and it's growing on me as well.  Take it from a chapstick addict; if you are afraid to wear color, just go for it and give it a try.  I promise you won't regret it.

NARS - Cruella
This is a great matte option and doubles as a liner too!

YSL 12 - Forbidden Burgundy
This is taking a bit of getting used to, but I love this color for fall

Chanel - Rouge Allure Extrait De Gloss - #61 Fatale
A perfect red gloss. It's not too sticky and you can make it as light or heavy as you want

Stila - Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss - Scarlet Vinyl
This stuff lasts, ladies! I got this in a gift bag a few months ago and have been using it nonstop. It's not drying or sticky.  And its a great starter for those looking to step into bolder lip colors.

I'll get by with a little help from some (fashionable) flats

I have never been much of a flats person.  Heels just always felt more comfortable and I like wearing them more.  I think it's because I like the height increase heels give me.  Friday I had foot surgery (which is why I have been MIA lately), and for the next 6 months (at least) I am bound to flats.  Tennis shoes for the first few weeks (which is going to make outfit choices almost impossible) and after that flats until the doctor says I can try something with a heel.  For the past month leading up to this procedure, I have been on the lookout for cute flats that I can wear during the day and could also transition into evening.  Something that didn't scream grandma!  Below are a few of my favorites at the moment.  It turns out, flats can be fashion able too!

Oxblood

I'm seeing Red, but not in a bad way.  I have always been drawn to red.  I'm not sure if being an Arkansas Razorback fan for so many years has intensified this obsession, but it's a color I have grown to love.  This season will make all you red lovers happy because Oxblood (or burgundy) is back at the top of the fall must have list this season.  It was popular last year and continues to be a color fashionistas everywhere are gravitating towards.  This dark red hue is one color you must add to your fall must-have list.  Below are a few of my favorites.

Slow transition to fall

I wore this outfit a few weeks ago to my Dad's birthday dinner.  I was in Arkansas where the weather was still on the warmer side. This light sweater has become one of my favorites.  Great for warmer days, but layers really well too.

3 years

I started this blog three years ago and who knew I would still have it going today.  Since moving to New York my life has totally changed.  Besides my amazing friends and family back home, I sort of started over once I moved here.  This blog was the only thing that came with me; so to speak.  At times I have neglected it, but this has always been an important part of my life.  I know that sounds silly, but this is the place I can escape to, fill my loved ones in on things I am doing here, discuss my ever evolving love of fashion, meet new friends, and just blab about things I love and enjoy.
Thank you for continuing to come here, thank you for pushing me to keep going, and thanks for inspiring me along the way, too.  I hope to have many more years of this! xx

Whiting & Davis Giveaway!!

Goood Monday morning, Lovelies!! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend.  I spent mine enjoying the gorgeous fall weather and doing some much needed (ok-much wanted) shopping.  And it turns out my obsession with all things burgundy is growing like a wildfire!

Case in point - The Whiting & Davis Marion Bracelet.  Ever since I received this beauty from them, I have been working my wardrobe around it.  I own a lot of gold jewelry, but when I saw the Garnet/Hematite option of their new Marion bracelet, I was just drawn to it.  It's not like anything I own, but will go with so much of what I already have (not to mention it's red, so I can work into my game day outfits.)  AND the color is perfect for fall!

If you haven't heard of Whiting & Davis before now, today is your lucky day!  Not only do they make fabulous jewelry, they also make great evening bags as well!  I remember when I was younger, i'd go through all my moms jewelry and purses when my sister and I wanted to play dress up.  She had one of the Whiting & Davis small mesh chain evening bags - I LOVED that bag and would ask to borrow it all the time.  It was the perfect size, looked ultra fancy and made me feel like a million dollars.  To this day, I can still picture that bag and all the times I played dress up with it.  Whiting & Davis has been creating gorgeous accessories since the 1800's! That is all you need to know to understand how amazing this line is and the tradition and quality that is behind every piece.  These are things you can treasure for years to come and pass down to children and grandchildren.

AND Lucky for you, they are giving away THREE of their Marion bracelets!! The giveaway starts today, so check out how to enter below.  This is one giveaway you just can't ignore!

-     Visit Whiting & Davis' Facebook page, ‘like’ their page and enter the contest.
-     Participants can refer their friends to enter the contest; each time a friend        enters, their own name will be added again to the mix. There is no limit to the number of times their name can be added.
-     Three winners will be selected at random. The winners will be allowed to select the plating/enameling color of their choice.

Whiting & Davis goes Pink for October!

As you all know, October is Brest Cancer Awareness Month.  Lots of companies and businesses come out in full force to help raise money for this cause.  Whiting & Davis is one of those fabulous companies that’s supporting breast cancer awareness.  They are partnering with the Ellie Fund – a Massachusetts-based organization fighting breast cancer and its effects on women and their families.  As if you could love W&D any more, this just adds icing to the cake.  I love companies that help and give back!

In raising awareness for breast cancer awareness, Whiting & Davis has created a pink Marion bracelet.  This bracelet is so transitional and universal, and what girl doesn't like pink?! It's also nice to know that the bracelet you purchased and wear often is helping find a cure for this terrible disease!
The bracelet will retail for $120 and is available on line here.

Whiting & Davis will donate 20% of the proceeds to a Boston-based organization, the Ellie Fund. The Ellie Fund is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization that fights breast cancer by easing its effects on patients and their family members across Massachusetts, by providing critical support services including transportation to medical appointments, childcare, housekeeping, groceries and prepared and delivered meals. Tracy Reese SS14

Nothing gets me more excited about something than music.  It just changes your whole attitude/demeanor, right?  That’s exactly what happened when I sat down at Trace Reese’s SS14 fashion show.  To the left of the runway, bongos were set up, so you knew there would be live music.  And above the runway? A gorgeous chandelier.  I mean, if those two things don’t put you in a good mood, I don’t know what will.  Well, actually, I do. As the gentleman started to play the bongos, models began strutting down the runway and look after look was just gorgeous.  The collection was filled with Afro-Cuban inspirations that just made you want to order up a mojito and start dancing.  With lace trumpet skirts and flouncy dresses, Reese showed a more sultrier side to her designs than in collections past.  She mixed feminine with boyish/athletic pieces.  Tilted fedora's added some spice and flare to the collection.  And for Michelle Obama (a fan of Reese’s designs), and the other ladies who adore her signature fit and flare dresses, don’t fret, there are still plenty of those for spring.  From graphic prints, florals and even gorgeous tapestry-like patterns, you will have more than enough options to choose from for every spring event you have on your calendar.  My favorite looks are below.
